HOTEL CASADEI · SURROUNDINGS & ITINERARIES · MONASTERY OF FONTE AVELLANA
Constructed around the year 1000, this monastery, cited by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy, is surrounded by a beautiful lawn where, in warmer weather, it is an enjoyable place to have a picnic. Situated on a small mountainous tract dominating a green valley, the spot is very suggestive, sometimes prevailed over by the peak of Mount Catria.
The quietness that reigns in the monastery is also present along the road to get there; about 13 kilometers from the town of Pergola near the township of Serra Sant'Abbondio in the province of Pesaro-Urbino, leading towards the Apennine range at the confines of Umbria.
The hermitage welcomes all visitors and the monks themselves organize guided visits, about every two hours, that last about half an hour each. During the tours, one can see the Scriptorium, dating back to the year 1000 and created by San Pier Damiani, where the monks once worked as scribes. In time, this writer's laboratory was made into and used as a luxurious residence for abbots and the religious during stays at the monastery.
The second place to visit on the tour is the room adjacent to the scriptorium where one can admire a precious eight meter long table completely inlaid.
The third stop on the tour is the cloister inside the monastery with pointed arches.
Once the visit is over one can stop at the ancient pharmacy where products produced by the Camaldolite monks are sold.
How to get there:
The Monastery, situated in the town of Pergola, is about 56 kilometers from Marotta, Take the Provincial Road of Val Cesano and turn right at the Marotta-Mondolfo exit leading on to the autostrada A14 in the direction of Bologna.
