HOTEL CASADEI · SURROUNDINGS & ITINERARIES · FRASASSI CAVES
Frasassi caves, discovered in 1971 by a group of speleologists from Ancona and opened to the public in 1974, today represent one of the major tourist attractions in the Marche region.
Along the route to reach these marvellous caves, one can admire the rolling hills and landscape of the Marche inland.
The Frasassi are underground karsts found inside the natural park of Gola della Rossa in the municipality of Genga in the province of Ancona, lovely medieval town, site of a small and legendary castle.
Tourists from all over Europe come to admire this magic world made of icicle shaped stalactites, stalagmites, and little pools of water.
The water, falling on limestone, melts small quantities that fall to the ground forming stalactites and stalagmites.
Inside the caves there are also little pools where the dripped water stagnates; another characteristic is that the environment is maintained at a constant temperature of 14° centigrade.
The path in the caves is very suggestive, also thanks to the particular illumination that exalts the colors and shapes.
The beauty of the caves halls with crystal arabesques, is unique, each one with its own name: Abisso Ancona, Sala dei Duecento, Sala dell'Orsa and Grand Canyon.
When you enter into the Frasassi caves, a place completely lacking in prospective and landmarks, one tends to lose his sense of direction, not realizing the actual dimensions of the stalactites and stalagmites.
The area of Frasassi is one of the most important speleological areas in Europe and, to show evidence of how much the environment is unpolluted, for a while now, a pair of eagles have settled their dwelling there.

How to get there:
The caves are located 87 kilometers from Marotta and easily reached by taking the provincial road of Val Cesano to the Autostrada A14 entrance in the direction of Ancona. Take the Ancona Nord exit and follow indications for Genga.
