HOTEL CASADEI · SURROUNDINGS & ITINERARIES · URBINO
Urbino is situated on two hills with an amazing panorama. The communal territory includes various quarters only a few hundred meters from the beautiful historical center (named by the "Unesco Patrimonio dell'Umanita") whose extension runs just over a square kilometer.
The township has very ancient origins, even though nothing precise is known about its first inhabitants, but recent archaeological findings confirm the presence of a dwelling dating back to around the 4th century B.C.
The Fortress of Albornoz could be a good starting point when visiting Urbino just as could the Porta Valbona, from where in a very short time one can reach the main square and beating heart of Urbino.
Among the monuments worth visiting are: the Ducal Palace, characterized by the turrets that surround the rear of it; Raffaello's native house, found on the via of the same name at number 57, where one can admire a fresco as well as the furnished rooms where the celebrated painter lived; the Monument of Raffaello, statue in bronze done by the sculptor Luigi Belli in 1897 found on the Pian del Monte in the panoramic piazza Roma; the neoclassic Duomo, done by architect Giuseppe Valadier, that contains canvas paintings by Federico Barocci; the Egyptian Obelisk, in front of the Church of San Domenico, whose origins date back to about 580 B.C.
Other places to visit in Urbino are the "Monastery of Santa Chiara", with architectural interventions done by the celebrated architect from Siena, Francesco Giorgio Martini, the college where Giovanni Pascoli studied until he was 12 years old, and other various other museums and galleries, as well as a botanical garden, with over 2,300 kinds of plant life, found in the University faculty of Chemistry, Physics and Natural Sciences.

How to get there:
