Christmas in Fano shines brighter than ever. The city is preparing for weeks in which lights, traditions and its maritime soul intertwine in a tale that warms the heart like the stories told by grandma in front of the fireplace. From 29 November to 6 January, the programme “Christmas in Fano: from Lapland to the Sea Land” promises to transform every corner of the city into an immersive experience.
This year Fano has decided to go big and completely redesign the visual identity of its Christmas. Alongside the classic festive red, the city embraces shades of blue, light blue and silver — a palette evoking waves, clear skies and guiding stars. After all, Fano is a seaside city, and its bond with the sea naturally becomes part of the holiday narrative. Walking through the centre, you’ll notice how shops and businesses have adopted these tones to decorate trees and windows, creating a coherent and highly Instagrammable visual effect. The result? A city that looks like a large marine-themed Christmas village. A choice that enhances Fano’s identity and places you in a cinematic atmosphere.
Behind this transformation lies an impressive teamwork effort. The Tourism and Events Department has involved associations, shopkeepers and local organisations such as Proloco, Confesercenti and Confcommercio, creating a true cultural and urban project. The guiding idea is powerful: even Santa Claus symbolically arrives by sea from Lapland and lands in Fano. A collective narrative that transforms the city into a maritime Christmas village where the sea is not just a backdrop but the main character.
The real novelty this year is the architectural videomapping — a first for Fano. The city’s monuments become luminous canvases animated by digital frescoes and visual stories that wrap around you, taking you into the history, legends and identity of Fano. The theme remains the “Sea Land”, expressed through evocative light displays and emotional atmospheres that will make festive evenings unforgettable. You’ll walk with your gaze lifted upwards, mesmerised by colours transforming buildings and squares into living stage sets.
The first major event is scheduled for Saturday, 29 November at the Pincio: the official lighting of Fano’s Christmas and the arrival of Santa Claus at his home inside the Christmas Village. From there the festivities burst into life with an ice-skating rink overlooking the Arch of Augustus, street performances, music and the lighting of the city’s three main trees, including the large one in Piazza XX Settembre.
On 30 November comes one of the most iconic events: the inauguration of the Nativity Scene by the Carnival Float Masters — the oldest papier-mâché nativity scene in Italy, hosted in the former Church of San Francesco. A masterpiece renewed every year with new statues and handcrafted details.
The celebrations continue straight to 31 December, when Piazza XX Settembre becomes the heart of New Year’s Eve with DJ sets, toasts and fireworks. Finally, on 6 January the Befana closes the festivities with entertainment, sweets and smiles for children.
