The 'Vie dei Presepi' in Urbino return, an event not to be missed

Hotel CasaDei

Urbino is gearing up for the twenty-third edition of "Le Vie dei Presepi", an event that will transform the heart of the city from December 2 to January 7, 2024. The adventure begins with a digital map, easily downloadable via QR code, which will guide visitors through the streets of the historic center, revealing hundreds of enchanting nativity scenes scattered among shop windows, palaces, churches, and windows. If you are a fan of these artisanal and artistic creations, you cannot miss three places, with internal itineraries, that act as custodians of the most extraordinary works: the Oratory of the Five Wounds, San Giuseppe in via Barocci, and the majestic Church of San Domenico in Piazza Rinascimento.

San Domenico: A Display of Unique Nativity Scenes

The artistic hub of the Vie dei Presepi is located in the Church of San Domenico, which will host a varied assortment of works: traditional nativity scenes, imposing 20th-century statues, eccentric nativities, and masterfully carved sculptures. Particularly significant are the works from Cantiano (PU), a town hit by a flood in the recent past. The artisans of Cantiano have created dozens of nativity scenes using trunks, roots, and branches collected on the slopes of Mount Catria. These natural elements, marked by time spent in the woods, create a charming backdrop for its fascinating representations of the nativity, telling the poetry of nature welcoming the Baby Jesus.

Artistic Jewels and Urbino Culture

The Oratory of the Five Wounds offers a suggestive atmosphere, with ancient cellars restored to display traditional nativity scenes and works made with poor or recycled materials. The overlying rococo church presents a large nativity scene with Renaissance costumes, faithfully reconstructed with precious fabrics, inspired by the paintings of Piero della Francesca. At the Oratory of San Giuseppe, visitors will be immersed in a late 17th-century environment, with a large mechanical nativity scene that reconstructs a 19th-century neighborhood in Rome, among ancient ruins and popular houses. Next to it is the museum of the Oratory of San Giuseppe, which houses the most precious jewel of Urbino: the life-size stucco nativity scene from the 1500s, the oldest in the world. Presenting the ticket of the Vie dei Presepi, the entrance is discounted, offering the opportunity to explore the museum, one of the most fascinating in Urbino.

The Tradition of Nativity Scenes in Urbino

The tradition of nativity scenes in Urbino is a dive into the cultural and artistic roots of the city. This ancient ritual, passed down from generation to generation, is reflected in the craftsmanship of the locals, especially the elders. Each nativity scene is a living testimony of Urbino's history, with natural materials that narrate the bond between art and the surrounding nature. The streets come alive with traditional nativity scenes, transforming the city into a theater of sacred narratives and family tradition. This practice continues to unite the community, celebrating the magic of Christmas with an affectionate look at the past.

A Unique Experience Among Shepherds and Shops

With dozens of points scattered throughout the city, Le Vie dei Presepi offer a unique experience among private windows, shop windows, churches, and alleys. A map at the entrance of Urbino's key points helps visitors create a personalized itinerary, through the streets and alleys of the city, revealing its most hidden corners. In the ancient premises of noble palaces and architectural monuments, micro nativity scenes, modern and traditional works by artists and sculptors, along with original mountain wood, bamboo, ceramic nativities, and more will be displayed. The event is not limited to these artistic wonders but also offers a series of events and initiatives to make the visit to Urbino during the Christmas period unforgettable.
