The Marche region is all beautiful, and always reserves pleasant surprises for those who visit it. Among the narrow cobblestone streets and ancient palaces of Fano, you can discover a delicious secret that never goes out of style: that of the Moretta. This special coffee, wrapped in the history and tradition of our enchanting city, represents a unique experience not to be missed during a visit to the region. Today we want to talk to you about it.
The history of Moretta di Fano has its roots in past centuries, when the city thrived as an important commercial and port center of the Marche. It is said that sailors and fishermen, wishing to warm up and find comfort during the cold days at sea, had their wives prepare a hot drink made of espresso, rum, sugar, and brandy. Over time, this drink became known as "Moretta", probably for its dark color and its invigorating taste. Others think instead that the name comes from the label of the rum used for the drink's preparation. Indeed, in the 50s/60s, most Cuban rums had labels that featured images of black women (Mureta in the Fano dialect), and from here the name of the Fano coffee. Legend has it that the fishermen's wives used to prepare the Moretta for their men before they set off for long voyages, wishing them good luck and protection. Since then, the Moretta has become a symbol of hospitality and human warmth in Fano, shared among friends and family during intimate gatherings and convivial moments.
Preparing a Moretta is an art that requires care and skill in dosing the ingredients, to ensure that the three layers remain well distinct and distinguishable in the glass. This is why a recipe passed down from generation to generation is followed. Here's what you need to create this delight: strong espresso coffee, dark Rum, Brandy, anise liqueur, sugar and then a lemon zest. Once you have the ingredients, start by preparing a strong espresso coffee in a large shot glass. Then, warm up equal parts of anise, rum, and brandy and place them at the bottom of the shot glass along with the lemon peel. Add a generous amount of sugar, stirring gently until it completely dissolves with the heat. Finally, pour the boiling coffee, delicately, so as to keep the froth.
The Moretta is a versatile beverage that suits many occasions and moments of the day. Here are some situations where you might enjoy a delicious cup of this special coffee.
