A Summer of Duels, Parades and the Middle Ages: Fano Returns to the Times of the Malatesta

Hotel CasaDei

If you love time travel but Doc Emmett Brown’s time machine seems a bit uncomfortable, we have a great alternative: *I Malatesta a Fano*! For the 2025 edition, the city will transform three times into a huge open-air historical theatre. The Malatesta dynasty returns as the star of the show with parades, duels, performances, medieval markets, armour, drums, and flag-throwers. June, August, and October: these are the three dates to discover medieval Fano in all its Renaissance glory, with the heroic deeds of Pandolfo III and fiery rivalries with the Montefeltro family.

Where Do the I Malatesta a Fano Events Take Place

Everything happens between the Pincio, Piazza Amiani and the streets of the historic centre, where citizens and visitors mingle among camps, musicians, and nobles in brocade. You don’t need to be a history buff to get swept up in the excitement. Just a bit of curiosity, a desire for fun, and perhaps a glass of our fine local wine. The first event is scheduled for June 7–8, 2025, and is called “Waiting for the Malatesta”. But don’t be fooled by the calm tone of the title: the historic centre will be buzzing with excitement! Flags will start flying, workshops will come to life, and the squares will once again echo with the voices of soldiers, merchants and jesters. It’s the perfect prelude to the big festival: two days dedicated to discovering medieval Fano, where the ancient rivalries between the Malatesta and Montefeltro mingle with theatre scenes, ancient music, and a truly enchanting atmosphere.

When Is the Palio delle Contrade Held in Fano

When August arrives, Fano’s historical re-enactments are in full swing with the Palio delle Contrade, now in its twelfth edition and a true symbol of the Fano summer. In this riot of colour, costumes, and tradition, the city celebrates the historic wedding of Pandolfo III Malatesta and Paola Bianca. And it really is like stepping back into the 15th century. The locals of each contrada, dressed strictly in period costume, compete in archery tournaments, tug-of-war, and horseback jousts for the ring. There’s fun for children, the curious, enthusiasts, and even those who just came to enjoy the shows and snap a selfie with a knight. The entire event is brought to life by the local historical group *La Pandolfaccia*, which proudly celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. An international flavour is added too: the Palio often hosts flag-thrower groups from twinned cities, like Rastatt, to make the event even richer and more engaging.

How Is the Death of Pandolfo III Malatesta Commemorated in Fano

The grand finale comes in October, when the temperatures cool and the atmosphere becomes more intimate. To commemorate the anniversary of the death of Pandolfo III Malatesta, between October 3 and 4, 1427, Fano holds a solemn torchlit procession in the heart of the city. Once again organised by *La Pandolfaccia*, the procession winds through the centre’s streets with flickering lights, hushed sounds, and focused faces. It’s a moment of reflection and commemoration that even moves the most sceptical. Walking through the night-time streets, accompanied only by the torchlight and the beat of drums, is a nearly mystical experience — it truly feels like stepping into another time.
