Barocci Returns to Urbino: Emotions between Mannerism and Baroque at the Ducal Palace

Hotel CasaDei

Urbino is reborn with its master: Federico Barocci is indeed the star of a must-see exhibition. From the summer of 2024, the city prepares to welcome a distinguished son: Federico Barocci. For over four months, from June 20 to October 6, the sumptuous halls of the Ducal Palace will host the monographic exhibition "Federico Barocci. The Emotion of Modern Painting", a unique opportunity to closely admire 76 masterpieces including paintings and drawings by the master of Urbino.

A Journey Through the Career of a Genius

Curated by Luigi Gallo and Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari, with Luca Baroni and Giovanni Russo, the exhibition traces the various phases of Barocci's long and prolific career. From his early beginnings, influenced by Roman Mannerism, to his artistic maturity, characterized by a refined use of color and light and by a deep psychological introspection.

An Artist Between Urbino and Rome

Born in Urbino between 1533 and 1535, Barocci was artistically trained in his hometown, where he already demonstrated his extraordinary talent at a young age. At twenty, he moved to Rome, where he obtained important commissions from popes and cardinals. His first major commission, the Saint Margaret for the oratory of the Compagnia del Corpus Domini, unfortunately, is lost today. His fame grew rapidly and he soon moved to Rome, where he worked for important patrons like Cardinal della Rovere and Pope Pius IV. Despite frequent stays in the capital, Barocci always maintained a deep connection with Urbino.

A Hymn to Beauty and Spirituality

Around 1560, Barocci was struck by an illness that debilitated him forever. But despite the physical difficulties, his creativity was not at all affected. Rather, his work was enriched with a new emotional and spiritual depth, reflected in masterpieces such as the "Madonna del Popolo" and the "Flight into Egypt". Barocci's works are characterized by their harmonious beauty, the elegance of the compositions, and the expressive intensity of the figures. His paintings, often laden with religious symbolism, invite the viewer to deep reflection on faith and the human condition. In 1570, he received his first ducal commission from Guidobaldo II della Rovere and from that moment began a fruitful collaboration with the duke, who appointed him his court painter. Barocci created numerous works for him, including the famous "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" and the portrait of the young prince Francesco Maria.
