The program of the Carnival of Fano promises thrills and fun, with no less than fourteen majestic allegorical floats of first and second category, and the generous shower of 200 quintals of sweets during what we call “Il Getto”. The 2024 edition, titled "Traveling with Vulón: Out of the lines... and spaces!", will take place on January 28 and then from February 4 to 11. The origins of the Carnival of Fano go back to the ancient celebrations of the Latin Saturnalia. The very term, Carnival, is inspired by the Latin "carnem levare", recalling the ancient ecclesiastical practice of abstaining from meat consumption in the days preceding Fat Tuesday and before the Lenten period. Documents dating back to the Middle Ages, particularly to the year 1347, preserved in the State Archive of Fano, tell of the first carnival manifestations in the city. Over the centuries, the Carnival of Fano has taken on a unique character, culminating in 1871 with the creation of a committee dedicated to the organization of the event, involving and thrilling thousands of people.
One of the most typical features of the Fano Carnival is the traditional "Getto" from the floats. As historian Fabio Tombari already tells, it is not just about confetti and ribbons, but a real rain of sweets. Chocolates, goodies, confetti, and candies are thrown from the allegorical floats, giving participants many beautiful pleasant surprises of sweetness to take home. Quintals and quintals of sweets that can be collected in a bag or thrown from the floats: just book a place all for yourself.
One of the indispensable characteristics of the Fano Carnival is the presence of Musica Arabita, a street band that has accompanied the parades since 1923. “Arabita” in Fano dialect means “angry”, so fast and lively. Her presence adds a touch of elegance and sophistication, further enriching the festive atmosphere.
